Repair Guide: How to sew on a button
A loose button doesn’t have to spoil your day or your favourite outfit. While it’s one of the most common wardrobe mishaps, it’s also one of the easiest to fix. You don’t need tailoring experience or special equipment; just a few simple stitches will restore your garment beautifully. Follow our refined step-by-step guide below to bring your piece back to life with confidence.
Step 1 — Prepare Your Thread
Cut a length of thread and pass it through the needle. Fold the thread in half and tie both ends together in a neat knot. This double thread will give your stitching extra strength and durability.
Step 2 — Create Your Anchor
Before attaching the button, create a small X-shaped anchor stitch. Start from the back of the fabric, bringing the needle to the front, and repeat to form a secure X. This marks the button placement and adds stability, an essential foundation for a lasting repair.
Step 3 — Position and Stitch the Button
Place the button directly over your anchor stitches. Bring the needle from the back of the fabric up through one of the buttonholes.
To keep the button slightly elevated, important for thicker garments like coats, place a spacer such as a pin or toothpick on top of the button. Continue stitching through the buttonholes 4–5 times, following the style of the existing buttons on the garment (whether crossed or straight).
Step 4 — Create the Thread Shank
On your final stitch, bring the needle up beneath the button. Wrap the thread around the stitches you’ve just made, about four loops to form a neat thread shank. This helps the button sit comfortably when fastened. Then, push the needle back to the underside of the fabric.
Step 5 — Secure and Finish
Tie a few small, tidy knots on the back of the fabric to secure your work. Trim the thread close to the knots, and your garment is ready to wear again—looking polished and refreshed.
